The 3 F's-Fun, Fear, Fitness

The 3 F’s

By Sally Edwards-National Spokeswoman for the Trek Women Triathlon® Race Series

As a professional triathlete and a spokesperson for the Trek Women Triathlon Series, I follow a plan I call the “3 F’s.” I'd like to share this plan with you.

1. FUN.! If you aren't having fun, then you aren't getting it. During your workouts, you must continually ask yourself the why question. For me, this is mind chatter that sounds something like,

"Why am I doing this?" Everyone has different answers to the why question, but among your responses had better be "because it's fun!"

2. FEAR! OVERCOMING FEAR! Triathlons are intimidating. Everyone has fears concerning them: fear of water, fear of injury, fear of taking time away from family, fear of failing, or a variety of personalized other fears. Remember that one of the thrills of cross training is learning to conquer those fears.

3. FITNESS! In return for the time and energy spent in triathlon training, you'll receive a host of benefits that far outweigh the price. The return on your investment is greater than on anything else that I can imagine. Tri-training will make you fit, and fitness is the cornerstone of your most valuable possession, your health.

*Everyone wants to be a winner. You CAN win, just by showing up!

*The winner is the one who has the most fun.

*The winner is the one who overcomes her fear.

*The winner is the one who gets the most fitness.
